Joseph Matthew Copeland was the youngest of 6 children of James Dugal Copeland and Catherine Gillis Copeland.

Joseph married Sarah Wade Cypert on November 1, 1843 in Wayne County, Tennessee. They had 7 children:
- Jemima Catherine
- Matthew Elihu
- Nancy Jane "Lizzie"
- Thomas Newton "Tom"
- Sarah Virginia Ann
- Lydia Alice
- Amanda Belle "Anna" (a school teacher who never married, came down with typhoid fever & died shortly afterwards at the age of 25.)

In the book, "The Pariss Sims Family and Related Families 1765-1965," on page 60, Joseph M. Copeland is mentioned, "Joseph M. Copeland, was a very prosperous farmer and trader. At one time he owned over 1,000 acres of land, much of the Francis Cypert Grant. As each of his children married, he gave them a good farm from his holdings."
