John "Richard" Quigley was born to John C. "Dick" and Amelia Quigley on a farm near Tama, Iowa. He graduated from Gilman High School in 1938. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a minesweeper on the U.S.S. "Tide" during World War II. The day after the invasion of Normandy Beach, the "Tide" was to clear the mines in the English Channel for more troops to advance, and the ship hit one of the mines off Utah Beach. He was one of 26 of 112 men aboard that died.
