Lawrence was the son of John Klein and Bernadina Von Bokern. On 10 Sep 1943 he married Helen K. Schuler and they had one daughter, Sue. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired carpenter for ICI Powder Plant. He was also a member of the Keswick Democratic Club and Louisville Racing Pigeon Club. Lawrence died at Humana Hospital-Audubon at the age of 74.
