Born in Fyn Denmark. (Funen (Fyn) is Denmark's second largest island, situated between the island of Zealand and mainland Denmark (Jutland).)

Mads came to America in 1882, at the age of 18 and located in Pocahontas, Iowa.

As a young man he worked for farmers in this area and then went to Colorado and worked in truck gardens for four years.

In 1888 he purchased the first 120 acres North of Rolfe in Section 8. Later he purchased 40 acres from Claus Johnson making a total of 160 acres.

He received his Citizen papers in 1893.

On May 26, 1906 he married Matilda Anderson, a native of Denmark coming to America at the age of 18.

His family consisted of four children, Sophia, Margaret, Dorothy and Emil.

His wife and infant son died in 1919.

In 1927 he purchased an additional 240 acres occupied by his granddaughter, Jo Ann and Jim Winthers.

He continued to live on the home farm until 1930 when he retired and moved to Rolfe and lived there until his death in 1955 at the age of 91.

A daughter, Margaret and husband, David Hen­derson, occupied the home farm for 50 years, when David died in 1979. Margaret continues to live on the home farm.

Sophia married Einer Esperson, now deceased, and she lives in Callender, Iowa.

Dorothy married Glenn Gaskill, a trucker, in 1938.

Both are now deceased.

He took part in organizing the Nain Lutheran Church of which he was a charter member, also, he was a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Rolfe, Iowa.
