"When Oakland (Garrett C., MD) was established in 1849, a large building was erected by John Thayer of Grafton, VA (WV), on the corner of Third and Oak Streets, to be used as a hotel while the railroad (the B.&O.) was under construction. It was known as the Thayer Tavern, and prior to the Civil War, when he was a U.S. Senator from Mississippi, Jefferson Davis stayed there for a while during the summer." - quote from the "Oakland Centennial History, 1849-1949," by Thekla Fundenberg Weeks.
