Arthur was the youngest living son of William Walter & Elizabeth Power Lyon (died Oct. 1819) of Barton under Needwood. His brother, Charles Walter Lyon, inherited the family home, Silver Hill, and Arthur struck out on his own. He first went to work as a merchant for the East India Company. Mr. John Owens, a Manchester merchant who had dealings with the Lyon companies, wrote of him in 1840 the following, "an active pushing young fellow who will make his way". Arthur became involved with Charles Schwind in a Rio based company, Lyon, Schwind & Co & married Charles' daughter, Sarah, on 12/29/1842 in Brazil. After 7 years residence in Bahia he returned to England in 1844. Arthur was also involved with his brothers in the company "Edward Lyon & Brothers". That company was eventually amalgamated in the mid 1860s after the retirements of Edward & Frederick Lyon in 1868 into "Lyon, Lord & Co." (located at 101 Princess St., Manchester), "Lyon, Comber & Co." (Liverpool) and "Lyon & Co." (listed in 1889 on 24 Esplanade Rd, Bombay, India). Arthur retired in favor of his sons A.W. Lyon, Jr. and Charles Sturges Lyon in 1880. He died at his estate, Abbotts Clownholme 1.5 miles from Rocester and left an estate of 107,000 Pounds Sterling. The home and grounds of 133 acres were originally purchased by him in 1864. During his tenure he had the front of the house enlarged by approx 10-12 feet. It was sold from his estate for 12,500 pounds in 1889 to the founder of Abbottsholme School, Dr. Cecil Reddie. He and Sarah had 9 children. Those not linked below are: Emma Lyon, and Katherine Sarah Lyon (Mrs. Thomas Drummond Inglis, wife of Maj. Thomas Drummond Inglis of Colchester).
