Jackson, Oct. 17: Joseph Lichtenegger, 96 years old, a prominent farmer of the Pocahontas community, died at 3:15 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at his home of infirmities of age. Choosing farming and production of livestock as a career after arriving in America from Austria as a young man, he came to this county to make his home.
Mr. Lichtenegger was born March 2, 1850, in Goishern, Austria, and following the lure of America came when a lad of 16 years. Married to Miss Marie Pilz, Sept. 15, 1871, at Pocahontas the couple resided a few years near Grays Point, doing farming.
In 1876 they bought a farm one mile north of Pocahontas and remained there. Mrs. Lichtenegger died Sept. 19, 1921, a few days after the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Lichtenegger was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and had been affiliated with St. John's Church at Pocahontas.
Surviving are four sons, Henry Lichtenegger of Pocahontas who resides on the homeplace, John Lichtenegger of Pocahontas, Herman Lichtenegger of Altenburg, August Lichtenegger of Cape Girardeau; one daughter, Mrs. Annie Gerler of Altenburg, 21 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
There will be a prayer service at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson Friday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock. The body will then be taken to St. John's Church in Pocahontas for service at 2 o'clock, Rev. Walter Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
