Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company D, 104th Illinois Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on July 2, 1863 at Elk River, Tennessee. His citation reads "Voluntarily joined a small party that, under a heavy fire, captured a stockade and saved the bridge."
