He later earned a bachelors degree from Texas Tech University in 1936. Orville encountered Bessie Harryman and they were married in 1937 in Ropesville. They moved to Garza County in 1939, where he taught school for several years. While teaching school in Morton, he left temporarily to assist his country during WWII by becoming a flight instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base. Following his time of service, he returned to Morton to continue teaching in the public schools.
While living in Morton, he left teaching and purchased a share of ownersh ip of Piggly Wiggly grocery store and operated it for several years. Orville's interests in banking led him to First State Bank in Morton, where he was employed for several years prior to retiring in 1987. Orville was a member of the First Baptist Church in Meadow and one of his many interests was organic gardening. Survivors include his siblings, Lucille Kirk of Brownfield, L.S. Tilger of Lubbock, B.J. Tilger of Murchison, and Jamie Cheek of Garland. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Orville is preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Tilger, who died June 26, 1996; his son, Dale Martin Tilger, who died July 28, 2001; and his sister, Jerry Johnson, who died in March of 1999. Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church in Meadow.
