MRS. ROBISON, 94, LITTLE OLD LADY, IS DEAD
Grandmother of Hoagy Carmichael Succumbs Here

Mrs. Mary C. Robison, the little grandmother of Hoagy Carmichael, who inspired him to write the well known ballad, "Little Old Lady," died in her home, 907 Atwater Avenue, Thursday afternoon at the age of 94. She had been confined to her bed for 12 weeks. Death was caused by the complications of age.

Mrs. Robinson, who was a life long resident of Monroe County, was "just a little old fashioned lady," Mrs. Howard C. Carmichael, mother of Hoagy, told a Telephone reporter. Hoagy had his grandmother in mind when he also write "Little Bit of Business Here, Little Bit of Business There," and "Bet That You've Been Window Shopping All Around the Square."

Mrs. Robison was born to James H. and Elizabeth Skirvin in Monroe County and married Alexander Robison in 1866. Mr. Robison, who was a carpenter contractor and a Civil War veteran, preceded his wife in death. He died in May 1927. Mrs. Robison was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in the Ladies Aid Society in that church many years ago. Until two years ago when her sight began to fail, Mrs. Robison spent much of her leisure time reading.

It is believed that Mrs. Robison held the oldest library card in Bloomington and plans have been made by the library to frame the card. A daughter, Mrs. Luella Manley, had made her home with Mrs. Robison for the last eight years.

Survivors are five daughters: Mrs. Manley and Mrs. Clara Hall, both of Bloomington; Mrs. Nora Helton of Washington; Mrs. C. E. Crump of Hammond and Mrs. Howard Carmichael of Indianapolis; and one son, Bert Robison of Columbus. There are also 14 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

While Hoagy attended Indiana University, he lived with his grandmother part of the time.

The song, "Little Old Lady," was dedicated jointly to both Mr. Carmichael's grandmothers, Mrs. Robison and Mrs. Taylor Carmichael of Indianapolis, who met for the first time in Indianapolis in June 1937.

The little grandmother heard her grandson dedicate the song to his to grandmothers over a nationwide network after being told to "Listen in for a surprise."

Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Allen Chapel and the Rev. Douglas Rae will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The body will remain at the Allen Funeral Home.
