Musician, Songwriter, Actor. Born Hoagland Howard Carmichael in in Bloomington, Indiana, he was a jazz piano player regarded as one of the finest popular music composers of the 20th Century. In the 1920s, he was playing and singing in his own band when he started recording and composing for RCA Victor in New York. As a songwriter, he is most noted for writing the classic tunes "Rockin' Chair", "Stardust," "Georgia," "Up A Lazy River," "Skylark", "Heart and Soul" and "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening" which won him an Academy Award for best song in 1951. He also had a successful career as an actor appearing the films "Topper" (1937), "To Have and Have Not" (1942), "Canyon Passage" (1945), "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) and "Young Man with a Horn" (1950).
