Hauptmann Richard PAHL (Iron Cross). Born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. At 12.48 a.m. on Tuesday the 19 April 1944, a Messerschmitt ME 410A-1 (No. 420293) of 1 Staffel Kampfgeschwader 51, based at Evreux, was shot down by a Royal Air Force Mosquito of 96 Squadron, West Malling, Kent, crewed by Wing Commander E. D. CREW and Warrant Officer CROYSDILL, having previously been damaged by flak over London.
Of the German crew, Feldwebel Wilhelm SCHUBERTH bailed out but he was drowned in the sea. His body was washed ashore next day near Friston. He was buried there in the parish churchyard, but later removed to Channock Chase German Soldatenfriedhof.

The pilot PAHL was found dead, hanging by his parachute from a tree in Dyke Road, Brighton. PAHL was a much-decorated officer, and he was wearing his Iron Cross when he died. Buried with full military honours in Bear Road Cemetery, Brighton, Sussex.
