Alfred Cardona

Alfred "Al" Cardona, age 86, of Rudyard, Michigan passed away unexpectedly at 5:55 p.m. on Friday evening, August 16, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Al was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 5, 1915. He and his wife had been coming to Rudyard since 1940 and moved permanently to Rudyard from Fairport, Ohio in 1978. He retired in 1978 as a pipe fitter after 27 years with the TRW Company of Cleveland, Ohio. He was a special patrolman for 8 years with the Fairport Ohio Police Department and had worked for the Tannery in Sault Ste. Marie.
He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church of Rudyard, where he was a Council Member for 6 years and a Treasurer for 4 years. Al served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, from September 16, 1939 to December 14, 1945. He was involved in many E.U.P. and State Organizations and was very active with the V.F.W. Post of Kinross, where he was past commander and had held other offices. He was Past District Commander and Chaplain of District 14 and a member of the V.F.W. Cooties of St. Ignace, Michigan. He was the AMVETS Past District Commander and Chaplain of District 7. He was a member of the D.A.V. O'Connor-Reinhart Chapter 52 of Sault Ste. Marie. He was a former EMT with the Kinross and Rudyard Ambulance Corps. Al was a member of the Rudyard Area Senior Citizens, where he was the Community Coordinator for AARP and served as vice chairman for the Nutrition Center. He served on the Chippewa County Red Cross Board of Directors, where he was coordinator for area blood drives and a certified C.P.R. instructor. He had given over 17 gallons of blood. Al was chairman of the Rudyard Library Advisory Board and was an active member of the Kinross Heritage Society. He was a Michigan Department of Corrections Liason for Alcohol Anonymous. He was chosen volunteer of the year for Chippewa County in 1996 and Senior Citizen Volunteer of the year for the State of Michigan in 1996.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Impi Sylvia (Ahola) whom he married on December 22, 1941 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; three sons; two daughters; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Raquel Karlovec of Painesville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Lee Cardona in 1947 and his parents, Juan and Grance Cardona.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 19th from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 17th at 11:00 a.m. at the Reamer Funeral Home with Rev. LaVonne Stephenson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until time of services. At his request, interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Kinross Heritage Society or the American Red Cross.
