THE MICHIGAN CITY EVENING DISPATCH, Jan 13, 1936:
“FORMER LOCAL SCOUTER KILLED – George R. Flowers, Widely Known Swimmer, Died in Texas – George R. Flowers, 25, widely known in local Boy Scout circles and former holder of the world’s record for underwater swimming died Thursday morning at Lufkin, Texas, seven hours after his car had collided with a truck in a dense fog, his Mother, Mrs. Ella Flowers, 509 E. Michigan, was informed Saturday. The accident occurred early Thursday morning near Lufkin, about 125 miles from Houston, where Flowers was a Boy Scout field executive. Camp Staff Member – Flowers was a member of the Potawattomie summer camp staff in 1932 and 1933, being swimming instructor the latter year. He held countless swimming medals and records, among them the world’s mark for under-water swimming, slightly less than 259 feet, set in an Indianapolis ‘Y’ about six years ago. He was the first scout in the local Boy Scout council to reach the Eagle rating and had been connected with scouting for more than 12 years. After graduation from the local high school, he attended Indiana university, where he was a member of the swimming team. He had been married since Sept. 21 of last year. His widow, the former Mary Charlotte Reynaud, survives. His mother and a sister, Mrs. Mildred Wombel, also survive, as do the parents of his widow. Funeral services were held Saturday at Houston.”George was in Hi Y,Football Wrestling,Student Council Science Club B.A.A.
