George W. Flowers is also seen in records as William G. Flowers. He was the son of William H. and Mary Jane (Carrothers) Flowers. On 19 Jan 1893 he married Ella Ferry who was born on 06 Feb 1875. Ella was the daughter of Emery and Martha (Thaxton) Ferry. In the 1900 census George W. “Florence” can be found living in Lenawee County Michigan. George and Ella had a son, William Emery Flowers, born in Lenawee County on 24 Aug 1901. This son is not seen in the 1910 census and must have died before that time. In 1910 William “Flower” was living in La Porte, La Porte County, Indiana. At this time they have a daughter, Mildred. In 1920 “Williams Flowers” was living in Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana. At this time they have a son George Flowers. In 1930 George Flowers was living in Michigan City, La Porte County and their son George R. Flowers was still in the household. George W. Flowers died in St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois on 24 Aug 1930 from a pulmonary occlusion following surgery. While in La Porte George worked as a fireman and later as a signal man, for the South Shore railroad, in Michigan City.
The Michigan City Evening News Dispatch carried an obituary for George Flowers on 25 Aug 1930 and it reads: “William G. Flowers, 907 East Eleventh street, died yesterday morning in St. Luke’s hospital, Chicago, after a two week illness. Death was pronounced due to a hernia. Mr. Flowers was born April 7, 1867 in Ohio. On Jan. 19, 1893 he was married in New troy, Mich. The widow, a daughter, Mildred Womble, of Ohio; a son, George Flowers, of Michigan City; and two brothers, Joseph Flowers, Joliet, Ill., and Samuel Flowers, Hastings, Mich. survive him. He was employed as a signal man at the South Shore tower in Gary. Mr. Flowers was a member of the Free Methodist church, where funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. The rev. G. A. McGrath, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Weesaw cemetery, Glendora, Mich., where the body will be taken immediately after the services. Friends may call at the Wilber funeral home until the hour of the services in the Free Methodist church.”
