Gertrude Grace Stone was the youngest daughter of Jessie Anna Grant and William Guy Stone. Her older sister, Pauline Louise Stone, was born on January 27, 1900 in Portland, Oregon. Guy Stone was a farmer and rancher and was said to be quite the character. Gertrude must have taken after her father, as she was said to have been quite outgoing.

Sometime between 1900 and 1910, the Stones moved to California where Gertrude would meet her future husband Elwood Bredell. The 1920 census shows the Stone family residing at 1952 Cahuenga and the Paul family living nearby at 2035 Cahuenga. Perhaps Gertrude and Elwood met as neighbors or in school. A few precious family snapshots picture the happy couple engaged in outdoor activities, on the beach and in the mountains.

On June 18, 1923, Elwood and Gertrude were married at the historic Mission Inn, in Riverside, California. It appears to have been a small and private event with just the immediate family members in attendance. Pauline and her husband Michael Rouse were the witnesses noted on the certificate.

Gertrude gave birth to daughter Jacqueline on April 8, 1924 and son Elwood Jr. was born 1928 at his parent's house on 954 Vista Street in Hollywood. Not much is known about Gertrude, but she appears to have enjoyed the piano, Hollywood social life and a good relationship with Mary Paul.

At the time of her death, Gertrude was still living at 954 Vista, but she and Elwood had gone their separate ways. The death certificate states that Mary Paul was the informant and that Gertrude was divorced. She was only 40 years old.
