US Congressman. Author. He was teaching mathematics and natural sciences at Austin College in Texas when the Civil War began. He left college to join the Confederate Army, serving in Company K, 25th Regiment of the Texas Cavalry. In 1891, he was elected for two terms as a United States Representative from North Carolina. In 1899, he published the book "The Case of the South Against the North," which uses historical evidence to justify the South's war against the North on the basis of constitutional principles.
