He was born at Gunpowder River, Baltimore Co., Maryland.

The son of William Greer, Sr. and his wife Mary Ann Fitch of Baltimore Co., Maryland.

He married Jan 1765, Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD to Ann Nancy Bailey, daughter of Thomas and Ann Bailey from Prince Georges Co., MD.

Sometime before the Revolutionary War they moved to the back country of Virginia into the part of Bedford county that in 1785 was broken off to become part of the new Franklin County.

During his long life in Franklin County after the close of the Revolutionary War, Moses Greer was a successful business man. He was a surveyor and farmer and accumulated much property.

1779 - While residing in Bedford County (later Franklin County), Moses Greer was Captain of Militia, and in 1779, served six months under Colonel James Callaway, stationed at the lead mines in Grayson County, Virginia.

1780-1781 - He was commissioned, October 28, 1780, Lieutenant in Virginia troops; served two tours of three months each. Also other tours in in Colonel Charles Lynch's and Colonel William Leftwich's Virginia Regiments and was on the march to Yorktown when the British surrendered. His entire service amounted to two years.

1781 - a Captain in the Revolutionary War. In 1832, Moses Greer, Jr., was a Justice of the Peace in Franklin County and stated at that time, that he had served several tours under Moses Greer, Senior, against the Tories."
"Captain in the Revolutionary War. Moses was Captain of the Bedford Co., Virginia Militia, and served under Colonel James Callaway. He was in Washington's Army as it moved on Yorktown and was said to be an aide to General Washington. He was later in life a judge and legislator." 1780s - After the Revolution, he elected to the State Legislature from Franklin County.

1782 - Bedford County VA Order Book 6:336.
1782 Thomas Arthur, gentleman, and Moses Greer were appointed to view a road from the head of Maggotty Creek to the Blackwater River. He was also appointed to take a list of tithables in his own and Capt Doggett's and Capt Richardson's militia companies.

1785 - One of the original petitioners in the Fall of 1785 for the formation of Franklin Co from Henry and Bedford Counties,

1786 - he was one of the first members attending the first session of the county court on January 2, 1786. .They met at the house of James Callaway, who married Elizabeth Greer, a daughter of Captain Moses Greer.
He was one of the first three Justices of the County Court.

1787 - Theodosia Webb was married to Austen Shoat (Choate) in Franklin County, VA in 1787 by Moses Greer. Austen was the son of Edward Choate of Franklin County.

1792 - "Moses Greer had 40 acres of land in Franklin County, Virginia. On November 10, 1792, this land was to be divided and laid out into town lots to be called "Wisenberg"." (HENNING'S STATUTES, Vol. 13, pages 505 and 586.)

1794 - He served in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1794.

1799 - "Moses Greer was a surveyor, farmer and business man. In politics, he was a Jeffersonian Republican, and as such was elected a delegate from Franklin County to the Convention of the Legislature of Virginia which met in Richmond, before the 1800 election. (GREAR - GREER - GREERE - GRIER by Robert M. Torrence, pages 24 - 25.)
A convention of 93 members of the Legislature of Virginia met in Richmond for the purpose of framing a Republican Ticket to be submitted to the freeholders of Virginia at the ensuing election of electors in 1800 to choose a President and Vice President. This convention appointed men from each County to carry on a campaign for these electors in their respective county. Moses was one of the men appointed for Franklin County.

1804 - He served in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1804.

1831 - Letter from the Veterans Administration, Washington, D.C., dated April 9, 1938, "Pension Claim File S-8609, Certificate # 2896 issued December 8, 1832; rate $ 460.00 per annum; commenced March 4, 1831; Virginia Agency.

1832 - He was allowed a pension on Application September 12, 1832; then a resident of Franklin County and was referred to as Moses Greer, Sr. (Copy of this pension application in ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS by Carolyn Beal, pages 137 - 138, which gives Moses age as 88 years in 1832.)

1832 - Franklin County and at the time of his application, was Presiding Judge of same county.

His son, William Greer kept up a family bible which is the source for the information for this family.

Moses was for a long time a Justice of the Peace for the County. He was the presiding Judge of the County Court for several years in his later life. Many wills were witnessed by Moses according to Will Book I, Franklin County Court Records.

A deed conveying to William (MosesFather), Moses and others the town of My. Plesent described"running past the old Greer House." (920 Maple Avenue.)

A convention of 93 members of the Legislature of Virginia met in Richmond for the purpose of framing a Republican Ticket to be submitted to the freeholders of Virginia at the ensuing election of electors in 1800 to choose a President and Vice President. This convention appointed men from each County to carry on a campaign for these electors in their respective county. Moses was one of the men appointed for Franklin County.

1832 - He was allowed a pension on Application September 12, 1832; then a resident of Franklin County and was referred to as Moses Greer, Sr. (Copy of this pension application in ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS by Carolyn Beal, pages 137 - 138, which gives Moses age as 88 years in 1832.)

1832 - Franklin County and at the time of his application, was Presiding Judge of same county.

His son, William Greer kept up a family bible which is the source for the information for this family.

Moses was for a long time a Justice of the Peace for the County. He was the presiding Judge of the County Court for several years in his later life. Many wills were witnessed by Moses according to Will Book I, Franklin County Court Records.
