Death of J. Weston DeLong Ends Long Service for the Church
The remains of Rev. J. Weston DeLong, who died at his home at Rock Island, Ill., a few days ago after an extended illness of diabetes, were brought to Hartford Monday. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Monday afternoon, Rev. C. V. Mull of South Bend officiating, and interment took place at the old cemetery on west Main street.
Rev. DeLong was born at Beekman, N. Y., May 16, 1852, and when four years of age he came with his parents to Michigan, the family settling on the farm north of Hartford which is still known as the DeLong place. On August 21, 1878, he was married to Miss Emma Hawley at Dorr, Mich., who survives him.
Receiving his educational training at Dayton, Ohio, Mr. DeLong entered the United Brethren ministry, his first pastorate being at Casco, Allegan county. Subsequently he held various pastorates in Michigan, notably at Waterloo, Charlotte, Bengo and Buchanan and at various cities in Indiana, having followed the ministry for over 35 years.
Rev. DeLong stood high in the councils of his denomination, having been secretary of the St. Joseph Conference of Indiana for twelve years, and treasurer of the Preachers Aid society of the same conference, both of which positions he held at the time of his death.
Aside from the wife, he leaves two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren to mourn his loss. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Esther Landon of Hartford and two brothers, Silas DeLong and Henry DeLong, both of Bangor.
Rev. DeLong left Hartford in 1876, but was well known here and had numerous friends in this section. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. fraternity.
