Archivalist Glenn Stephens identifies John with a son of the 1748 immigrant (aboard the "Two Brothers") Johann Philip Steffan, who initially settled in Chester County. Around 1790 Philip and his sons were buying land in Franklin County. The family is attested in real estate records and tax records, as well as several early censuses. During the Revolutionary War the men are recorded serving in the militia. As of the 1806 Septennial Census of PA the brothers John and Jacob were recorded adjacently in Franklin County.
John's only census in Indiana County is the 1820:
1820 Wheatfield, Indiana Col. PA – John Stiffy and wife 45+, 3 boys 10-15 (Jacob 1804, Philip 1806), 1 girl 10-15 (Maria 1808), 4 boys under 4 (David 1812, William 1812, Jonas 1815), 1 girl under 10. Gone from the household: John 1801, Margaret 1802.
