After high school she went on to attend and graduate from Maine General Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. After graduation she worked at MaineGeneral Hospital, and eventually moved back to Rockland and began work at Rockland District Associations.
Barbara and Karl were married in 1956, and she worked part-time at the old Knox Hospital and later at Penbay Medical Center. She was an avid rug hooker and made many beautiful rugs. She enjoyed crosswords and reading, and in her spare time she would sell sweet pea flowers from her roadside stand.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Karl Niemi of South Thomaston; daughters, Celia Niemi and her fiance, Alfred Randal, of South Thomaston, and Cynthia Gray and her husband, Randal, of South Thomaston; and grandson, Karl Coombs of South Thomaston.
The family thanks Kno-Wal-Lin for their services and kindness, also Audrey Mercier for her care during Barbara's final illness.
A private graveside service will be held at the family's convenience at North Parish Cemetery in St. George. (Bangor Daily News posted 11/21/2011)
