Aileen Patricia "Pat" Carlson, 83, of Spotsylvania County, formerly fo Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., died peacefully Tuesday, June 8, 2010, with loving family at her side. Mrs. Carlson was born in 1927 in Topeka, Kan. She taught school in a rural one-room schoolhouse before marrying the love of her life, John Carlson, and starting their family. They lived in the Los Angeles area for many years and moved to Spotsylvania in 2004. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Massaponax.
Mrs. Carlson had a beautiful alto voice and sang for decades in church choirs and with oratorio societies and musical chorales, performing a variety of sacred and classicsl music, including the "Messiah." She was a founding member of the Ascension Lutheran Bell Choir, with which she performed for more than 20 years.
She designed and created beautiful crafts of all kinds, including quilts, stitchery and painting, and she was an accomplished seamstress. She shared her gifts generously with others, teaching and inspiring generations of young artisans, and creating exquisite banners and church paraments for the congregations to which she belonged throughout her life.
Mrs. Carlson was married for 62 years to Arthur John Carlson of Manhattan, Kan. She is survived by five children, Karen Mikkelsen of Houston, David Carlson of Spotsylvania, Martha Gooding of Newport Beach, Calif., Matthew Carlson of Lincoln, Neb., and Paul Carlson of Los Angeles; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Carlson was known and treasured by her friends and family for her loving heart and helping hands. Her devoted and loving presence as mother, grandmother and great-grandmother is greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at Christ Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg....
