John was born to Melchoir Abplanalp and Margretta Schield in Brienzwiler which is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. He was one of 16 children born, 7 girls, 9 boys.

John enlisted in th US Army at Fort Douglas, Utah on May 5th 1898. He served in Battery B Company during the Spanish - American War. Pvt. John Abplanalp was discharged in August of 1899 at the Presidio, San Francisco, California and returned to Utah.

He married Martha Louisa Law and raised a family in Salt Lake City who survived him. John is buried at Wasatch Lawn in Salt Lake City.
