THE LEWIS FAMILY (Notes written by my grandmother, Jennie Jones, daughter of Susan Miranda Lewis-Potts & Newman Potts)

Written by Sarah Virginia (Jennie) Jones King

Urban, and Susan Casey Lewis, owned quite a strip of land in the Indian Springs District of Wayne County. As a child, I did not travel far from hom
e, so that I never knew where mother went when she was visiting among the Lewis', only knew in what direction the land lay.

On the last trip I made to North Carolina, I had the opportunity to visit this part of Wayne County, and I was thrilled to see where Grandmoth
er Potts lived when she was a girl. It is beautiful country, almost like a State Park. The old home is gone, but several of the Lewis family are still on the land, but living in modern homes, which was disappointing to me. I had hoped some of the old houses would still be there.

Urban, and Susan Casey Lewis, reared a large family as follows:
John married Abigail Herring. Joel married Penny Harris. Isaac married Clarissa Carter. Polly married Abraham Martin. Fanny married Joseph D. Denmark. Pachia (Patience) married Joseph D.
Denmark. Eliza married Wateman Martin. Bethany married Henderson Martin. Susan married Newman Potts. William married Harriet Casey. Elizabeth married William Starling. Anyone acquainted with
the old families of North Carolina, would recognize most of these
names belonging to prominent business and professional people and successful farmers.
