Fern was the son of John Avery Bowers and Ada (Phillips) Bowers. He was born at home in the Alarka Community of Swain County.

He would marry Austeen "Tiny" Richards, daughter of John B & Elsie Neoma (Cole) Richards. They would make their home in Gaston County.

Obituary: The Charlotte Observer, December 30, 1994

Mr. Fern Fold Bowers, 61, of 2055 South Point Road in Belmont died Dec. 28, 1994, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Funeral service is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Goshen Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a member. The Revs. Harold Blankenship and Bennie Turner will officiate. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia. Visitation is from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm tonight at McLean-Bumgardner Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be the deacons of the church.

Mr. Bowers, a retired employee of Burlington Knit Fabrics in Mount Holly, was born in Swain County, son of the late John and Ada (Phillips) Bowers. He was a deacon and an usher at church.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Austeen (Richards) Bowers; brothers, Ora Bowers of Bryson City, Clyde Bowers of Belmont; sisters, Mrs. Inez Cochran and Mrs. Loretta Hicks, both of Bryson City; a number of nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be made to Goshen Freewill Baptist Church, 1300 W. Catawba Ave. Ext., Belmont, NC 28012.
