He then ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the US Senate seat vacated by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1960. During his career as a lawyer, he won important civil rights cases, including two landmark victories before the US Supreme Court. In 1980, he started a second career as a newspaper columnist for the San Antonio Express-News .
