Texas State Legislator, Lawyer, and Journalist . He graduated from the Texas Military Institute in 1938. He later received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Texas, in Austin, attended Loyola Law School, in Los Angeles, and graduated from St. Mary's University, in San Antonio, in 1949. During World War II, he served in the rank of a Major in the US Marine Corp. From 1951 - 1957, he served in the Texas House of Representatives. He then ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the US Senate seat vacated by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1960. During his career as a lawyer, he won important civil rights cases, including two landmark victories before the US Supreme Court. In 1980, he started a second career as a newspaper columnist for the San Antonio Express-News .
