Jonathan Elkins, twin of Jeremiah Elkins, son of Jonathan and Joanna (Drew) Elkins was born August 30, 1819, Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

He married first, Eliza A. (Lamprey) Leavitt, daughter of Eli and Hannah (Sanborn) Lamprey and widow of Thomas Hale Leavitt, Sr., about 1849, at Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

They had four children:
Melvinah Elkins (1849-1852)
Amanda Elkins (1851-1851)
Orin Elkins (1854-1934)
Robert S. Elkins (1859-1930)

Jonathan Elkins enlisted into the military September 29, 1862. He mustered in October 24, 1862, Company I, New Hampshire, 15th Infantry Regiment, he mustered out August 13, 1863 at Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.

Eliza A. (Lamprey)(Leavitt) Elkins died September 21, 1863.

Jonathan married second, Sophia A. (Hook) Davis, widow of Elijah Davis, December 28, 1870, at Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

Jonathan Elkins died June 8, 1878, Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

Sophia A. (Hook) (Davis) Elkins died January 27, 1906, at Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.
