Son of Sir William Forbes of Monymusk, 5th Bt. and Christian Forbes. William was educated at Edinburgh High School, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He married Elizabeth Hay, daughter of Sir James Hay, 4th Bt. and Dorriel Campbell, on 20 September 1770.
He succeeded to the title of 6th Baronet Forbes, of Monymusk, Aberdeenshire on 12 May 1743, then succeeded to the title and arms of Pitsligo following the death, without heirs, of John Forbes in 1781.
His portrait hangs in the Bank of Scotland Museum, The Mound, Edinburgh.
