Betty Head Baker, age 92, of Moorefield, WV, passed this life on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. Born on September 18, 1919, in Thomas, WV, she was the daughter of the late Harry Davis Head and Kathryn Higgins Head.

Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, Kermit R. Orders, who died during World War II, and her second husband, Donald J. Baker, Sr. in 1964. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Martha L. Baker.

Betty is survived by one daughter, Susan B. Munck and her husband, William of Frostburg, MD; two sons, Donald J. Baker, Jr. and his wife, Beverly, of Moorefield, WV; Stephen C. Baker and his wife, Meredith, of Winchester, VA; a brother-in-law, Robert O. Orders of Charleston, WV; four grandchildren, Erin Baker, John Baker, Ben Baker, Madison Baker and two great grandchildren, Emma Kathryn and Owen Michaelis.

Betty was a West Virginia University graduate with a bachelor's degree in Business Education and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa. She was the first woman to serve as student body president of West Virginia University and the first woman to be elected to the West Virginia State Senate. Betty was active in many community organizations such as the Hardy County Red Cross, the Hardy County Public Library, and the American Association of University Women. She was named Spirit of Hardy County by the Hardy County Community Foundation in 2009.

Betty was a homemaker and a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church where she served as treasurer for many years. She was also a deacon, an elder, and a member of the church choir. Betty was also a member of the Moorefield Women's Club and the Moorefield Athletic Boosters.

The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday November 14, 2011, at the Elmore Funeral Home in Moorefield, WV. The funeral service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at Moorefield
Presbyterian Church with Reverend Katherine Jackson officiating. Burial was at the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield, WV. Memorials may be made to the Moorefield Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 653, Moorefield, WV 26836.
