He was born to Elizabeth (Sanborn) Robinson after his father James Wilson Robinson had died earlier the same year of appendicitis. He married Rita Mae Reams Bacon 7 Aug 1933 in Crystal Falls. Their son James Hector was born 24 Dec 1936 in Ewen.

His life-long interest in science, jovial engaging personality, after school work ethic, and gift of gab served him well as an instructor and motivator of young people. His career started in Ewen, Bruce Crossing, and other Ontonagon County Schools and ended in Detroit area of Lincoln Park.

Numerous articles in the Ironwood Daily Globe (Ironwood, Michigan) detail moments in his early career, primarily the 1930's.

He started making telescopes with students in the 1960's and the HJ Robinson Observatory in Lincoln Park continues to occupy and inspire young and old alike.

As a grandpa he was entertaining and interesting to listen to. He was always questioning why people did crazy things. As a youth he ran track and admitted that it was with no great performance on his part that he won a few distance races.

He served as the weekend manager of his son Jim's pole vault amateur career with a father's loyal support during and after Jim graduated from EMU-Yipsalanti.

In the very early 1960's he went out one day and bought a camper-pickup combo without his wife's knowledge and consent. He took a trip to Alaska (I think) and maybe one out to AZ petrified forest (since I remember the rock brought back), but otherwise that rig rusted away to nothing out back.

As guest speaker at his daughter Betty's 40th HS reunion in Ewen, he was in rare form and managed to embarrass her lauding family achievements. Interestingly (exasperatingly), this sort of humor was not always appreciated in the spirit it was intended. He was a funny guy and loved those opportunities.

His country retirement home across the river from the Au Gres River Roadside Park was in a beautiful setting. I wonder if he ever knew that an infant brother of his was buried nearby.
