GREENE - Berniece (Mrs. Donald) Hagarty, 89, of 15271 Noble Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000 as a result of a single motor vehicle accident two miles east of Highway 14 on County Road C23.

Ellen Berniece Dougherty was born July 19, 1911, near Dougherty, Cerro Gordo County, a daughter of Daniel J. and Mary Jane "Mayme" (Mullin) Dougherty.

She received her education at St. Patrick's School in Dougherty, graduating in 1929.

She was united in marriage to Donald Lawrence Hagarty on Sept. 23, 1937, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Following their marriage, they started farming southeast of Greene, where she lived until her death.

Ellen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Living family members include her five children: Jack Hagarty of Racine, Wis., Jerry Hagarty of Greene, Renee and her husband, Fred Billman, of Racine, Wis., Tom Hagarty of Des Plaines, Ill., and Janet Hagarty of Iowa Falls; five grandchildren, Patrick Hagarty, Michael Hagarty, Thomas Billman, Aaron Billman, and Ellen Billman; one great-grandchild, Kayla Hagarty; and one brother, Edward Dougherty of Rockwell.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hagarty, on Jan. 7, 1982; her parents; two sisters, Cecilia Geary and Luella Dougherty; and three brothers, Daniel, Robert and John Dougherty.

A funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene. There was a scriptural wake service beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of America at the funeral home.
Memorials were to the Berniece Hagarty Memorial Fund in care of the family.
