Helen Viola Woodley, 94, of Akron, Iowa passed away early November 13, 2011 at the Akron Care Center where she had lived since March 2010.

Cremation has taken place. A service honoring Helen's memory will be held at a later date with burial following in the Riverside Cemetery in Akron. The Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.carlsenfuneralhome.com.

Helen Viola Anderson was born October 8, 1917 the daughter of Victor and Ella (Johnson) Anderson on a farm near Big Springs in Union County South Dakota. Helen graduated from Akron High School in 1936. In 1938, she married Edward G. Adams who died in 1942. They had two children, Jerome "Jerry" and Patricia "Patsy". In 1947, she married Merlin B. Woodley.

Helen was employed by the Akron Farmers Coop as their bookkeeper for nearly 20 years where Merlin was the General Manager until 1962 when they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Helen and Merlin in their retirement returned to Akron in 2001.

Helen enjoyed sports and was a basketball standout at Akron High School. She was an avid Phoenix Suns basketball fan and a talented adult league bowler. At age 90, she was still able to shoot baskets at the high school court. She loved her pets and in recent years caring for her cat "Patches" kept her active in her Akron home.

Helen is survived by her son, Jerome and his wife Peggy (Hamann from Anthon, Iowa) and their children: Stephanie and her children: Bailey & Eric, and Eric and his children: Jack, Grace & Luke all of Kirkwood, Missouri; a daughter Patricia Bedes and her husband Ken of San Pedro, California and their children: Irene and her son: Jack, Lawrence and his daughter: Alexandra Mae, Michael and his children: Ryan and Tara, & David, all living in the Los Angeles, California area. She is also survived by two younger brothers, Ken Anderson (Marge) and Lee Anderson (Helen) who live in southern Florida.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, two older sisters, Evelyn and Pearl, both of her husbands and her grandson, Jeffrey.

Memorials can be made in Helen's name to the Akron Care Center Building Fund in care of the Akron Care Center, 121 South Street, Akron, Iowa 51001.
