Thomas Lee Allen, 79, of Roanoke, died suddenly on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Allen was born in Elliston on June 26, 1932, and lived in the Roanoke area most of his life. He was employed with Tultex Mills for nearly 30 years of service. Mr. Allen attended Rockingham Court Methodist Church and loved to fish and make canes. He was a self-taught musician who enjoyed playing gospel for nursing homes with his wife and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Noah E. and Ella S. Allen; infant sister, Lucille Allen; and two brothers, Albert Allen and Eugene Allen. Mr. Allen is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy M. Austin Allen; his children, Thomas Ervin Allen, Deborah Baker, and Becky Comer, all of Roanoke, and Thelma Beyke, of Richmond; nine grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel and Clarence Woods, of Roanoke, Verna and Donald Steen, and Margaret and Harrison Dudley, all of Bedford. A service honoring his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2011, at Lotz Funeral Home, 1001 Franklin Road with the Rev. Craig C. Newman and the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial will be held at Bandy Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m.
