Gonzales Inquirer Dec. 6, 1902

Yesterday afternoon while Drs. J. H. McCaleb and R. L. Smith were enroute to the home of a patient on the Thompsonville road, a bad place in the road near a small culvert, caused the buggy wheel to drop suddenly, the lurch throwing Dr. McCaleb over the dashboard and beneath the wheels, one of which passed over his chest, while the other ran over his bowels. The contents of his hypodermic case were broken into fragments, while he suffered severe bruizes that for several days to come will be unpleasant reminders of the accident.

Dr. Geo. W. Caleb Succumbs

Dr. Geo. W. McCaleb died at 1:50 o'clock this afternoon at his home on East St. Lawrence street, after a lingering illness extending over a period of several months. The interment will take place Wednesday morning in the Masonic cemetery, and under the auspices of the Masonic lodge.
He was 49 years, 4 months and 13days old, and was one of the most successful physicians of this section. He was a man of kindly disposition, and had many warm personal friends not only in Gonzales, but where ever he had acquaintances.
Dr. G. W. McCaleb was born in Montgomery county, Texas, being the sixth of ten children born to Jesse and Dorcas McCaleb, natives of Tennessee and Texas respectively. He received a literary education in the Academy of Thornton and the Southwestern University at Georgetown, 1874, and in 1880 began the study of medicine under the direction of a competent medical practitioner, at the same time being engaged in teaching school. He later attended lectures in Tulane University. New Orleans, and graduated from the same. He began the practice of his profession in Caldwell county, where he resided for several years. In 1889-9- he took a post-graduate course at New Orleans and in the latter year he also took a post-graduate course in the New York Polyclinic, at this time devoting almost his whole study to surgery and diseases of women and children. Upon his return from New York he located in Gonzales where he has since resided, and where he succeeded in building up a large and successful practice. He was a member of the State Medical Society, belonged to Gonzales Lodge No. 30, A.F. & A.M., and was also a member of Gonzales Lodge No. 105, knights of Pythlas.
In the year 1897, on April 19th, Dr. McCaleb and Miss Nannie Vanham were united in married at the home of the bride at Big Hill. This union, which was a happy one, was blessed with a daughter, who lived to bring sunshine into the home for more than seven years, but was called home on March 21st. 1907. Dr. McCaleb is survived by his wife, several brothers and other relatives to whom The Inquirer extends its sympathy in their hour of bereavement.
