Edith Suter Funkhouser, 91, of 291 Franklin St., Harrisonburg died Friday morning at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since July 21.

Mrs. Funkhouser was born May 10, 1892, at the Suter homestead near Cook's Creek Church and was a daughter of the late Rueben Daniel and Mary Shrum Suter.

She graduated from James Madison University in 1913 and had taught school in Dayton and Waynesboro.

She was an elder of Trinity Presbyterian Church and helped organize and was the first president of the Rockingham Memorial Hospital auxiliary.

Her husband, Charles A. Funkhouser, died in August 1939.

Surviving are a son, J. Richard Funkhouser, and a daughter, Catherine Liles, both of Harrisonburg; a stepson, Dr. H. Gray Funkhouser of Exeter, N.H.; three stepdaughters, Janet Ellis of Damascus, Md., Nancy Durham of Greensboro, N.C., and Lois Yager of Harrisonburg; a brother, Carr M. Suter Sr. of Decatur, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held in Dayton Cemetery. A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dan Grandstaff.

The family will receive friends following the service. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family said contributions may be made to the building fund at Trinity Presbyterian Church, South High Street and Maryland Avenue, Harrisonburg.
