Hazel was born a mile northwest of Lancaster, Kansas, ninth of ten children to Commodore Perry Nettleton and Fannie Jane Carter. She graduated from Atchison High School and attended college at Maryville, Missouri. She taught one room schools in the Bell and Eden districts near Lancaster. She married Paul Harlan Riley, 28 April 1927 in Atchison. They lived a short time in Effingham and Lancaster. They moved to Atchison in 1932 and to Lawrence in 1938. They left Lawrence, early in World War II to Tulsa, Oklahoma. They then moved to Tonganoxie, KS for a short time before moving to Winchester in 1946. Again a move in 1949 to Oskaloosa before returning to Tulsa where Paul died in 1957. She returned to Kansas, living in Topeka. She died in the Winchester Hospital. She was the mother of four sons, the first dying at child birth. Raymond was born in 1932; Glen in 1935 and Charles in 1940. Charles died in Honolulu, Hawii in 1999.

Hazel C. Riley, 85, of Topeka, formerly of Lancaster, died Wednesday at the Geriatric Center in Winchester.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Topeka Bible Church. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lancaster Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hampton-Barrett Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. Memorial contributions may be made to Topeka Bible Church, 1101 Mulvane, Topeka, 66604.
Mrs. Riley taught in Bell and Eden rural schools in Atchison County before she was married. She later worked at St. Francis Hospital for 12 years before retiring in 1972.
She was born June 10, 1902, near Lancaster, the daughter of Commodore Perry and Fannie Jane Carter Nettleton. She was a graduate of Atchison High School. She moved to Topeka in 1958 and lived at Landmark Plaza the past seven years.
Mrs. Riley was a member of the Topeka Bible Church, the Rhythm Band at Landmark Plaza and several ars and crafts clubs.
She was married to Paul H. Riley on April 28, 1927, at Atchison. He preceded her in death on May 16, 1957. An infant son died in 1930.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond Riley, Winchester, Glen Riley, Meriden, and Charles Riley, Honolulu, Hawaii, five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
