James Milton Claypool was born in 1838 in Jo Daviess, Illinois, to Milton and Rosanna Claypool.
He married Mary Ann Crummer in 1861. They had one son together who died when he was about 1 year old. James and Mary Ann divorced.
James served in the 3rd Missouri Calvary Regiment, Company G, during the Civil War on the side of the Union.
After the war he moved to Nebraska where on 29 Jun 1867, he married Civil War widow Augusta (Yarwood) Brainard/Braynard. She already had three children. Augusta had four children with James. They lived in Kansas and Missouri before moving to California.
James died on October 26, 1912, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 74.
