Sudanese War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Captain in the 3rd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. On September 22, 1898 in the Battle of Gedarif, Captain Hore-Ruthven saw an Egyptian officer lying wounded within 50 yards of the advancing Derviahes. He picked up the wounded officer, carried him towards the Egyptian Battalion and had to drop his burden several times in order to fire upon the Dervishes and check their advance. For saving the officer's life and bravery under enemy fire, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal. He remained in the Army, served in World War I and retired a Brigadier General of Welsh Guards in 1928. In 1944, he was appointed 1st Earl of Gowrie and Deputy Constable Lieutenant Governor of Windsor Castle.
