ONTONAGON, Mich. -- Irene Martha Elizabeth Lannet, 89, of Paynesville, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at the Aspirus Ontonagon Long Term Care Unit.

She was born July 6, 1922, in Paynesville, daughter of the late Elmer and Hilma (Mattson) Lindberg.

She married Walter Karjala in 1945; he died in 1946.

On Feb. 21, 1948, Irene married Jorma Lannet and worked beside him on their dairy farm with their children until they retired in 1975.

She was a lifetime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Paynesville, where she served as a member of the Council Board, Women's Guild, Sunday School and as a Bible School teacher for many years.

Irene loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, in her flower garden, watching baseball and basketball on TV and listening to local high school sports on the radio. She was most happy with her family, friends and dog, Scruffy, around her.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Edward) Avedisian and Sharon Peltola; six sons, Walter (Hazel), Bernard, Marvin, James, Dennis (Lori) and Daniel; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sigrid Babbitt, of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Jorma, in 2001; a daughter, Marlene Elizabeth, in 1956; two brothers, Hugo and Reino; and a sister, Mildred.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. EST Saturday, Nov. 12, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Paynesville, with the Rev. Timothy Nyikako officiating.
