PAYNESVILLE -Hugo Lindberg, 88, of Paynesville, died on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.

He was born on July 11, 1920, son of the late Yalmer and Hilma (Mattson) Lindberg, on the family farm in Paynesville and conquered tuberculosis in 1946 after spending 1,460 days at the Powers Sanitarium.

On Sept. 4, 1954, Hugo married his childhood sweetheart, Mayme Majava, in Trout Creek.

He started sawing lumber with his father when he was 15 and worked for the Luke Carlson Lumber Co., Nestor Thompson Lumber Co., Powell Lumber Co. and the Peterson Lumber Co. He retired from sawing lumber in 1972 and went into full-time dairy farming with his wife, Mayme. He retired, with his wife, from dairy farming in 1982 and built a home on the homestead of his grandparents in North Paynesville.

Hugo served on the Settlers Co-op Board, the Settlers Credit Union Board and the Farm Service Administration. He enjoyed coffee and conversation at the local coffee shops, the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Tigers, reading and keeping up with the news.

He is survived by his wife, Mayme; two sons, Clifford (Lisa) of Paynesville and Calvin (Linda) of Gaastra; a daughter, Karen (Marvin) Larson of Paulding; grandchildren, Ben and Jessica Lindberg, Levi and Drake Lindberg, Kyle and Ricky Choichois, Alex, Karl and David Larson; a great-grandchild, Marin Larson; two sisters, Irene Lannet of Paynesville and Sigrid Babbit of Medford, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine Choichois; a sister, Mildred; and a brother, Reino.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. EDT on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Bruce Crossing.

Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 3 p.m. EDT until the service.

The Wandersee Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing is assisting the family.
