On August 24, 1825, María Dolores Soto y Saldaña married Richard Exter, who died at sea on June 18, 1829, en route from Veracruz to England. Mrs. Exter's second husband, John Charles Beales, whom she married on August 3, 1830, dealt only with New York speculators. Exter, an English merchant and land speculator, had left his widow and two-year-old daughter, Anita, his interests in two empresario contracts of 1826 and 1828 encompassing some 48 million acres in eastern New Mexico, the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, and southeastern Colorado. Maria and John had four children. Within weeks of this marriage Beales took over the management of these contracts for his wife and stepdaughter. In New York on April 27, 1831, he transferred their interests to the Arkansas and Texas Land Company. tshaonline.org
