Lavon Johnson grew up on her parents' farm near Frametown in Braxton County, West Virginia. She graduated from high school in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where she lived with her older sister Rata Barnett, and where she was in high school with her future husband Harry Herdman, whom she married on 9 December 1933 at Catlettsburg, Boyd County, Kentucky.
She was trained as a nurse at the Capital City School of Nursing of Gallinger Municipal Hospital, Washington, DC. She spent most of her career as the school nurse at Parkersburg High School. After she and Harry retired, they divided their time between their house in Parkersburg, at 2505 Avery Street, and a home in Melbourne, Florida.
After Harry's death in 1976, Lavon married William Edwin Galvin, whom she met in Melbourne. William was born 28 August 1907 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts and died 13 May 2001 at Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida; his burial place is unknown and may be with his first wife in Massachusetts; he had no children; after Lavon's death he remained a popular participant in Herdman and Johnson family events.
By Lavon's first marriage to Harry Herdman she has one daughter born 1943, who graduated from Parkersburg High School and who lives in North Carolina in 2021. She also has one grandson born 1975 who lives in New York City.
Bio by Ronald Decker, her nephew.
