James died in influenza epedimic of 1918 at the same time as his wife, Leona and their new born daughter. They are buried in a common grave, though the marker does not indicate the daughter's interment, she was too young to have been named.

Jame's mother, Honora Burns Popst, and his brother Hugh J. Popst are also buried at Evergreen. Hugh too was a victim of the 1918 influenza epidemic.

Honora's husband and Jame's and Hugh's father George W. Popst was an organizer for the Western Federation of Miners. He was killed in the organizing wars in Cripple Creek in May of 1895. He died at the family home in Altman. He is interred at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Cripple Creek.
