Hugh was always called Huey by the family, he died in the influenza epedimic of 1918. At the same time his brother James Gaskill Popst with his wife Leona and their new born daughter died of influenza. James, Leona and the new born daughter are buried at Evergreen in a common grave, though their marker does not indicate their daughter's interment as she died too young to have been named.

Huey's mother Honora Burns Popst is also buried at Evergreen.

Hueys father George W. Popst was organizer for the Western Federation of Miners. He was killed in the organizing wars in Cripple Creek in May of 1895. George died at the family home in Altman. He is interred at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Cripple Creek.
