Abner A. "Socko" Chewning Jr., 88, of Vinton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, November 3, 2011. He was born in Vinton, son of the late A.A. and Ottie Parker Chewning Sr. His brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.
Mr. Chewning was the co-owner and operator of Chewning's Grocery from 1957 to 1977. He then helped Wood Farms on the Roanoke City Market. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 until 1945. He was a long time member of the Vinton Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Vestine (Totsie) Chewning; two daughters, Linda Williams and her husband, Wayne, of Moneta, and Janet Shell and her husband, Woody, of Roanoke; a son, David Chewning and his wife, Cheryle, of Roanoke; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Berkshire Rehabilitation Center for their care during his brief two week stay, also Peggy Waldron and Dot Carter.
Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 7, 2011, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. The Reverends Roy E. Heinlen and Maurice Wright will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 6, 2011, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Arrangements by Oakey's Vinton Chapel, Roanoke, VA.
