He was born about 1832. He married Mary Jane Anderson 17 Mar 1853, in Owsley County, Kentucky (info from Widow's and Minors' Pension). To this union was born 6 children, James Franklin Hughes, William Pleasant Hughes, Meredith Isaac Hughes, Francis Kimber Hughes, Nancy Elizabeth Hughes and Martha Anne Hughes (full names also from the Pension Records).

He died 9 Feb 1863, leaving a widow and 6 children under the age of 16 years. Mary Jane Anderson Hughes, his wife died 13 Oct 1869 of Typhoid Fever leaving the same 6 children orphans. Newton Jasper Hughes father acquired Guardianship of the 6 children and was awarded their pension from their father's military service on 10 Jan 1870, which was to commence 14 Oct 1869.
