Helen’s birthdate and location come from family records; her birth record is not listed at familysearch. She is listed in the 1841 census as Helen, age 1 year old, with her family located in Kirkwall.

There has been some confusion down through the years as to her name. Some of the earliest family researchers identified her as Eleanor with a nickname of Helen; contact later with her descendants identifies her as Helen with the nickname of Nellie. Census records, marriage record and references to her in old letters support that her name was Helen; her name appears as “Elener Wishart” in only one census record, suggesting that her given name was Helen, and both the nicknames of Nellie and Elener were used by family members. It is unknown if she was christened with the middle name of Slater, or if she added it later in life. She is identified as Helen Slater Wishart on her marriage record.

Helen and William Andrew were married on 10 December 1860 at Newmill in the parish of Glenbervie, county of Kincardine, Scotland. William was the son of John Andrew and Jane Leslie, named in the marriage record.

According to the 1900 US federal census, Helen had given birth to six children, only two of whom were living. Four children have been identified:

John Andrew, born 28 Oct 1870 with birth recorded at Drumlithie, Glenbervie Parish, Kincardineshire, and died 10 hours after birth.

Twins William Lindsay Andrew, born first at 10:50 am and James Andrew born second at 11:00 am on 10 March 1872 with birth registered at Arbroath, Forfarshire (now Angus county). James died 18 hours after his birth.

George Barclay Andrews born 9 Aug 1877 with birth registered at St. Vigeans Parish, Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland.

William, Helen and their two sons William Lindsay and George Barclay, emigrated to Pawnee co, Nebraska, probably entering the United States through Canada, ca 1878; according to family history George was one year old when they arrived.

The family name shifted from Andrew to Andrews after their arrival in the United States.
