Eunice LaVonne May (Gray) Howard, the daughter of Frederick and Ruie (Hunt) Gray was born February 11, 1927. She died Friday, June 6, 2008.
Eunice graduated from Moorhead High School in Moorhead, Iowa. On September 7, 1947, Eunice was united in marriage to Donald Harvey Howard in Estherville, Iowa. The couple farmed near Estherville until their retirement in 1984. They were members of the Gruver Presbyterian Church for 52 years until it closed then attended First Christian Church in Estherville.
Eunice devoted her life to caring for her five children and running a busy home. Eunice enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, writing stories, going for long walks, bird-watching, sewing, quilting and collecting chicken figurines. She also enjoyed volunteering her time with the Emmet County 4-H program, and was a member of the Farm Bureau, Royal Neighbors of America, Ryan Lake Club, Gruver UPW, the Emmet County Cattlemen Association Cow Belles, East Riverside Club, Monday Afternoon Bowling League, and church circles. Eunice was awarded the title of Honarary 4-H member in 1973, Emmet County Rural Homemaker of the year in 1976, and she and her family were awarded the Emmet County Safe Farm Family Award in 1963. She will always be remembered for her legendary fried chicken, potato salad, fudge and pies.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Donald, five children and their spouses and fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Eunice was preceded in death by her father in 1933, her mother in 1973, her step-father Mack Antrim in 1974, and her brother Fern in 1975
