Lewis W. "Sam" Dawdy, 89, of Detroit, Ill., and formerly of Roodhouse, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at Eastside Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsfield. He was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Hillview, the son of Lewis E. and Ida Forrester Dawdy. He married Betty Huffman on May 7, 1943, in Elkton, Md., they later divorced. He married Anna Bell Shipley on Oct. 30, 1977, in Bowling Green, Mo., and she survives at home.

Also surviving are his sons, Mike (Linda) Dawdy, Eugene Ray Dawdy, Robert (Kim) Dawdy and Terry (Ronnie) Dawdy, all of Jacksonville, Paul Dawdy of Roodhouse and Tim Dawdy of Roy, Utah; stepchildren Gary (Melissa) Shipley of New Berlin, Kathy (Gene) Meyer of Pittsfield, Larry (Jennifer Hogan) Shipley of Jacksonville and Bobby (Barb) Shipley and Bruce (Jody) Shipley, both of Winchester. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one on the way; 13 stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife, Betty; a son, William Dawdy; a grandson, Christopher Dawdy; and two brothers, Norman and Edward Dawdy.

He was a 1940 graduate of Roodhouse High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945. He retired from the railroad after 21 years, then 11 years for Mobil Chemical Company, and then 15 years as a truck driver, retiring in 1992 with LSSD Trucking Company.

Services were entrusted to Coonrod Funeral Home of Winchester, Illinois.
