Met Tragic Death In Runaway

W. T. Gillespie, Killed Saturday When Team Became Frightened and Overturned Rig

W. T. Gillespie, for many years a farmer on the edge of Summerfield met with a tragic death last Saturday morning.

He had been out to his farm to get some feed and was on his way to the Wm. Grazee farm to grind it when his young team became frightened at a little girl who was waving her hand or handkerchief at a playmate. The horses ran north on Third Street until they came to the State line where they turned west. In making the turn Mr. Gillespie was thrown against a very small embankment.

Mrs./ Frank Shuck was at his side within a moment's time but death had came instantly. Mr. Gillespie had received the blow of the fall on his face and head, which were bruised and bloody. The first persons did not recognize him because of this. After the arrival of the doctors and undertakers the body was removed to the Gillespie town home. The funeral occurred Monday with the Rev. W. L. Torrence officiating. interment was in the local cemetery.

William Thomas, son of William and Mary Ann Gillespie, was born near Charleston, Indiana March 8, 1848 and died at Summerfield, Kansas December 2, 1916, age 68 years, 8 months and 22 days. He moved with his parents to Iowa in 1869 and lived there until he came to Kansas in 1884 to make a home for his bride.

He and Mary Isabelle Robison were married February 18, 1885 and came immediately to their home south of town where they have made their home until they moved into town last spring. To this union was born one son. Mr. Gillespie is survived by his wife, one son James, two grandchildren and one brother Robert of this place; a sister, Regina Carr and brother, John at Evanston, Wyoming; brother Joseph at Stephens, Minn. One brother James and sister, Mary preceded him in death. Besides these a host of friends mourn his loss.
